This is Jed

Hamilton, Ontario is my hometown. It’s famous for a lot of things, like producing 60% of Canada’s Steel, being home to Dundurn Castle and for having the first ever Tim Horton’s shop.

It is now also known for being the home of Jed. Jed is our dancing man. I hope if you’re ever in steel town you get to meet him.

This film was made by Human Stories, two guys who believe everyone has a story to tell and share.

Best.Signs.Ever.

It’s amazing how well trained our brains are at processing design cues and language on signs. These playful, positive signs were designed by Click Design Consultants for the National Trust. And they are ace.

Immortal Fans

Do you love your football club enough to want your organs to live on in another fan once you pass? The passion of your support would live on in the person who receives your organs. You’d be an immortal fan. “Promise your heart will beat for another fan”. Genius.

This is yet another amazing campaign that uses football to make a real difference – and most of these ideas seem to stem from famous footballing nation, Brazil. For example, this team that lost it’s stripes to encourage blood donations and this team that pulled off a stunt to show the rate of deforestation in Brazil.

A Softer World

downpour

A couple of years ago, my friend Lorena introduced me to the website ‘a softer world’. Since then it’s the first thing I check in my RSS feed everyday.

Emily Horne takes the photos and works on the design of the comics and Joey Comeau writes the copy. Beautiful stuff. Here are a couple of my favourites.

This beer fridge is reason enough to carry my passport around with me. What a genius campaign – well done Rethink. I wonder if this means Molson Canadian is coming to bars and pubs in Europe soon?

Ps – Happy 146th Birthday Canada.

Why Football Matters

Using football as a medium to appeal to the masses is a very clever thing to do.

WWF teamed up with Brazilian agency Grey 141 to raise awareness of deforestation in Brazil. Every four minutes the equivalent of a football field is clear cut, so what better medium to use than a football field to show the damage? And then of course hijack four minutes of a game to show the real rate of clear cutting.

It’s a brilliant stunt – and apparently led to an increase of 73% traffic to WWF’s website.

PS – Another brilliant Brazilian Football thing is the team that lost their red stripes until enough blood was donated to their local blood bank.

The Printed Pages

photo-6

I came into work today to find the very first issue of It’s Nice That’s Printed Pages on my desk (thanks Rob!).

In a time where most publications are moving away from print in favour of electronic versions, It’s Nice That have moved in the other direction – and what a great move.

This Because

My good friend Zoe has just set up quite a brilliant thing: This Because.

TB

This Because is a website containing a carefully curated collection of products that are made resourcefully and help people live generously. It gives you a selection of products that aren’t just self-serving, products that benefit others in the process – be it sausages where a portion of the cost gets donated to impoverished areas, or upcycled purses that helps raise money for Women for Orphans and Widows. Products range from food to household items to clothing and each product tells the story of the cause and/or craft you’re supporting with your purchase.

Crowdfunding Atheletes

Pursuit

I do love a good crowdfunding platform, and Pursuit is my most recent find. It’s a site that allows amateur athletes in Canada the chance to gain support to achieve their athletic goals.

Athletes can create a profile, share their ambitions and experience and then offer something, called a ‘Give back’ for their supporters on a sliding scale. This could be anything from a signed poster to a personal training session with them.

For athletes trying to go pro that may not have the financial stability to quit working, or the backing of large commercial sponsors, Pursuit offers them a chance. And I think it’s ace.
