Random Observations About Hong Kong

alexjohnshongkong

1) Because space is hard to come by and many people live in incredibly small flats, there’s a strong culture of dining out for most meals. There are more than 10,000 restaurants – which means even if you ate a different one everyday it would take you nearly 10 years to try them all. And that’s assuming that none closed down or any new ones opened.

2) Pineapple buns in Hong Kong are just like tiger bread in the UK. Neither contain their namesake.

A Change of Scenery

For the next few months I’m taking a break from London and will be working in Hong Kong. It sounds insane to say that I’m taking a break from London only to move to a city just as populous, however, Wikipedia has informed me that London is the 23rd biggest city in the world whereas Hong Kong ranks 30th. So I guess that’s something. A few less people.

Hackney Laces, 3 Years On

Screen Shot 2014-09-02 at 14.43.35

On July 1, 2011 I arrived home from work to find a letter on my doorstep from Unltd. The letter read “Congratulations you have been awarded a level 1 award for your project just another football club”.

This was a big day. And Each year July rolls around I think back to beginning of laces and this day. Support from Unltd meant that not only did I no longer need to self- fund football sessions for girls, it meant that someone actually believed in my idea.

There are some services that that just make sense. Uber, for example, makes booking taxis effortless. Airbnb makes finding accommodation anywhere in the world incredibly simple. And now, TaskRabbit joins the list of companies that make life easier with a clever bit of tech.

TENT is a collaborative working space in London’s Kings Cross area housing startups, individuals and entrepreneurs and a range of diverse people. In a building that will be demolished in a few years time, co-founders Simon and Laura Willows have created something wonderful in what would otherwise have been a vacant, lifeless space.

With the football season on break for the summer, I’ve got a lot of time on my hands. So I’ve been screenprinting. Tea towels and pillowcases. I was given this kit as a gift and ordered lots of plain textiles to print on.

The Printiprinter

Steve Qua is a massive football fan. So much so that he makes hand linocut prints of every Liverpool FC match result. Now his hand printed results service extends to the World Cup scores. A lot of love goes into these prints. And they’re so beautiful.

Homeless Fonts

Creativity is can be a very powerful tool. Homeless Fonts is a testament to this. By creating original hand drawn fonts and selling them to individuals and brands, this project is empowering people out of poverty and supporting a worthy foundation.

Rivers of Flowers

London based Illustrator Hiromi Suzuki has collaborated with the Rivers of Flowers to make this lovely little animation. Without being preachy or instilling guilt, this video highlights the importance of wildflowers to ecosystem function. Flowers = pollen = bees = food = life.
